THE GENESIS OF CHTHON
Norrin J. Powell

(www.myspace.com/scorpion_chthon / www.scorpion6174.bebo.com)

Quite recently, a groundbreaking tome arrived on the scene, so in tune with the current climate of superhero genre exploitation, yet so utterly disparate, that we are given clues, as to the very psyches of those whose powers of being extend beyond the boundaries of most, mere mortals. The man beyond this project goes by the name of Norrin J. Powell. Both an artist, and a writer, this book is laced with hand drawn, black and white imagery, studding a plot of stygian proportions, and laced with characters both good and ill, in intent. The story centers around a group of friends, bound together by abilities that mark them as shapes in a puzzle that seems to have place only in the most outlandish fantasies of the mainstream population. As it progresses we are led through a world that dictates the lives of it's denizens in a brutal backlight, that can at times, expose wonders most of us would not believe had exsited. Through it all, the six in question, are called to use their various abilities to not only defend their world against those who would threaten to destroy it, but also to hold fast to one another and maintain their own personal infrastructures. We are met with a pastiche of heroism and villiany that extends through a short duration of time. In this period of the late eighties, lines are drawn, and definitions are met, that cut the shape of mutandicism, and superheroics into a sharp reality. Most engaging, in this read, are the facets, which defy logic, and suspend our notions of what reality can be. The only way to further describe this evolution of state, is to pick up a copy, and read it for yourself.

SUCCUBUS BLUES
Richelle Mead

Succubus Blues is an intriguing soliloquy of Seattle's supernatural underground, written in a canny, tongue in cheek style and incorporating elements of sardonic humor, eloquent witticism and a 'do it yourself' panache of suspense. Demoness, Georgina, resides in the emerald city and takes her hell bought glamour out at a Queen Anne bookstore with a full brace of men, vying for her mystical affectations. She holds court with a myriad of other immortals, including imps, demons, vampires and even angels. Plying her dark trade, we come to know the character through a series of psychological insights into her variegated natures. Though she yearns for the love of a mortal, she must make penance to her superiors in matters of affection. The plot progresses as we grow to know the others surrounding her involvement in the unfolding drama. Chaos begins to ensue when it rears its ugly head at a mid-junction where we are met with the mysterious thrill of murder. A mystery becomes known and drawn through until it's inevitably solved in an explosion of mindless ultra violence. For those of you living in our fair city, you'll find a host of references to neighborhoods and areas therein that will draw your interest through from beginning to end. Look for more work from this prolific author in the future!
